Description

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is found only in small amounts in certain foods.  Our bodies can also make vitamin D when exposed to sunshine (hence why vitamin D is often referred to as the sunshine vitamin).  Vitamin D is considered an essential nutrient because we need to obtain it from food or with the assistance of sunshine which allows our body to manufacture vitamin D.‡

Vitamin D is often found in supplements, and may be found in two forms: vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol).  Our body produces vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) which is easily absorbed and used in many biological functions.  The D2 version of vitamin D can not be used by the body, and must be converted to D3 for use.   While we are able to convert some D2 to be used for body functions, we use D3 much more effectively.‡

Vitamin D is necessary for good health.  It helps your body absorb calcium, one of the main building blocks for strong bones.   A deficiency of vitamin D can lead to a condition called rickets in children, it can cause rickets which is a rare disease that causes the bones to become soft and bend.  Low vitamin D also leads to poor absorption of calcium which can lead to osteoporosis.‡

Your body needs vitamin D for other functions too.  Your muscles need it to move, and your nerves need it to carry messages between your brain and your body. Your immune system needs vitamin D to fight off invading bacteria and viruses.‡
